Description:
The HVAC Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across a diverse 60-acre campus. This position performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots equipment issues, and provides reliable HVAC solutions for a variety of facilities, including offices, dormitories, apartments, and independent buildings. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, excellent customer service abilities, and the experience needed to support a well-rounded maintenance team. The HVAC Technician (may be referred to as the A/C Mechanic) is responsible for installing, maintaining
and repairing heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required
Technical/trade school certification in HVAC or a related field preferred
Knowledge of commercial and residential HVAC systems
Experience using HVAC diagnostic tools, gauges, meters, and testing equipment
Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration systems
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Special Requirements:
Valid State Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record
Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening
Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 pounds
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Ability to climb ladders, work from elevated surfaces, crawl into confined spaces, and stand for extended periods
Ability to obtain and maintain any certifications required for handling refrigerants and HVAC equipment
Duties and Responsibilities:
Respond promptly to HVAC service requests and emergency maintenance calls
Analyze equipment performance and determine appropriate repair solutions
Test electrical circuits, controls, and components for continuity and proper operation
Inspect piping, tubing, and refrigerant connections for leaks and system integrity
Install, inspect, repair, and replace HVAC, ventilation, refrigeration, and climate control systems
Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using appropriate testing equipment
Repair or replace defective motors, compressors, controls, thermostats, wiring, valves, piping, and other HVAC components
Install and connect thermostats, humidistats, timers, dampers, ductwork, piping, and related equipment
Install sheet metal ductwork and associated HVAC components as needed
Cut, drill, and prepare building surfaces for equipment installation while maintaining a safe work environment
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems to maximize equipment life and efficiency
Replace air filters, clean coils, condensers, evaporators, grills, drain lines, and other system components
Inspect equipment for proper operation and identify potential issues before failures occur
Test refrigerant systems for leaks and recharge systems in accordance with EPA regulations
Report equipment deficiencies, safety concerns, and repair recommendations to Facilities leadership
Maintain inventory of commonly used HVAC supplies and notify supervisors when replenishment is needed
Follow all federal, state, local, and organizational safety regulations and policies.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Properly handle refrigerants, chemicals, and hazardous materials according to EPA and OSHA standards
Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Assist other Facilities team members with maintenance projects when needed
Support campus events by ensuring HVAC systems are operating properly before and during events
Become familiar with campus buildings, mechanical rooms, and utility systems
Participate in after-hours, weekend, or emergency maintenance as required
Properly document all maintenance work done to units in order to make a record of work completed on individual units for historical data
Follow all maintenance trouble shooting protocols to ensure Preventative Maintenance is performed correctly
